The last novel of Hermann Hesse is about a mysterious practice, based on cosmo-poetic analogies: the Glasperlenspiel (β€œGlass Bead Game”). Essentially, this Game – a sort of β€œmagic theatre” – aspires to be a synthesis of all arts and sciences. Though the rules of the game are never explained, only alluded. In this Game, music has a central role and it is in connection with mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. Inspired by this novel, through a mythical method of free associations, the Theatrum Phonosophicum develops a multisensorial performative event for celebrating the winter solstice, that is: the rebirth of Light.
