A full immersion in the philosophical-musical world of Hermann Nitsch. The seminar includes a theoretical part with the discussion of Nitsch’s writings and sound examples, as well a practical part aimed at the collective creation of a “sound performance” (Klangaktion) in homage to the Maestro, as the conclusion of the event.
Hermann Nitsch’s Theater of Orgies and Mysteries is conceived as an all-encompassing experience for the five senses. Its roots are essentially philosophical and musical. Nitsch receives the fundamental impulses for his Gesamtkunstwerk not only from Greek tragedy, the philosophy of the pre-Socratics and Nietzsche, the psychoanalysis of Freud and Jung, Taoism and Zen Buddhism, the mystical writings of Meister Eckhart, from tachisme and action painting, but also from the musical dramas of Richard Wagner, the German symphonism, the experimental music of the 20th century and the Mysterium, the unrealized vision of Scriabin.
The 6-Tage-Spiel, a cosmic theatrical ritual lasting 6 days and 6 nights (without interruption) is structured like a gigantic symphony in 6 movements.
Nitsch is not only a theater man, poet, painter and philosopher, but also a composer. In addition to music for his actions, he writes ‘absolute music’: works for orchestra, for ensemble, for organ, etc. For Nitsch, the origin of music lies on the one hand in the sound excess, in shouts and noise, on the other in the contemplative idea of the harmony of the spheres.
The seminar lasts 5 days, 6 hours a day with times from 10-13 and 15-18 and is conceived above all for music and art students, but remains open to anyone interested in learning more about Nitsch’s music and in experiment with sound.
